Overview

It is the genius of Lancelot Brown which educes out of a seeming wilderness order and delicious harmony… he displays strange magic and surprises them with miracle after miracle.” From a 1797 guide book on Capability Brown. On September 17th 2016 Red Earth will complete their year long residency GENIUS LOCI at the National Trust’s Berrington Hall in Herefordshire with the Autumnal performance event STRANGE MAGIC - an atmospheric journey across Capability Brown’s eighteenth century parkland transformed by live sound, folksong, fire, performance and pyrotechnics. This will be a completely unique opportunity to witness an evocative landscape journey through the parkland, which will highlight Brown’s ingenious design using fire and pyrotechnics. As summer draws to a close, so does ‘Genius Loci’; Red Earth’s captivating contemporary art exhibition which celebrates 300 years of ‘Capability’ Brown.

Red Earth’s residency at Berrington has seen them create five installations in the parkland and mansion, including ‘Telling the Waters’ on Brown’s serpentine pool. They subtly highlight Berrington’s Brownian features and draw visitors out into the park. David Bailey, General Manager said: “We’ve seen far more visitors exploring beyond the ‘ha-ha’ and venturing out into Brown’s magnificent landscape. ‘Genius Loci’ intrigues visitors and encourages them to discover more about their environment.

Lead artist Caitlin Easterby said: “ ‘Strange Magic’ marks the culmination of ‘Genius Loci’; starting at 6pm visitors can explore house, park and installations; discover musicians in woodland glades as workers build autumnal fires beneath the Great Trees, and experience a haunting soundscape across the lake before returning through a parkland illuminated by fire for the final pyrotechnic mapping of Brown’s ingenious landscape.

‘Strange Magic’ is an elegy to Capability Brown’s 18th century design and pays tribute to the workforce who built it.
